The Complete Guide to Staghorn Sumac & Pink Sumac Syrup
Staghorn sumac is one of the ingredients that makes The Syrup Shop different. Its deep red berries have a naturally tart, citrus-like flavor, and we use them in several handcrafted formats for customers who want a finished syrup, a make-at-home option, or an everyday cup of tea.
This guide explains what staghorn sumac is, how it differs from poison sumac, what Pink Sumac tastes like, and which product format may be the best fit for you.
What is staghorn sumac?
Staghorn sumac, or Rhus typhina, is a North American plant known for its fuzzy branches and upright clusters of deep red fruit. The berries have a bright, tangy flavor that is often described as tart or citrus-like and have a history of culinary use.
The word “sumac” can sound alarming because many people immediately think of poison sumac. They are not the same plant.
Staghorn sumac vs. poison sumac
Staghorn sumac is Rhus typhina. Poison sumac is Toxicodendron vernix. Staghorn sumac is recognizable by upright red fruit clusters, while poison sumac tends to grow in very wet or swampy areas and produces pale or whitish fruit.

What does Pink Sumac Syrup taste like?
Our Pink Sumac Syrup is bright, slightly tart, and balanced with the sweetness of local raw honey. Staghorn sumac is the centerpiece, while a thoughtfully selected blend of herbs, citrus, and botanicals rounds out the flavor.
You can enjoy the finished syrup straight from the bottle or add it to sparkling water, tea, lemonade, smoothies, yogurt, or oatmeal.

Ready-made Pink Sumac Syrup
Pink Sumac Syrup is the simplest choice when you want a finished, small-batch syrup that is ready to enjoy. It is made with staghorn sumac berries, local raw honey, herbs, citrus, and botanicals. It contains no artificial colors or preservatives and is available in multiple bottle sizes while supplies last.
Pink Sumac Syrup DIY Kit
Pink Sumac Syrup DIY Kit includes the measured dry blend and directions needed to make three pints at home. Make all three pints at once or prepare one pint at a time. Simply add water and the sweetener of your choice; we recommend local raw honey.
Unopened kits can be stored in a cool, dry place for up to 24 months. Once prepared, refrigerate the syrup and enjoy it within two months, or freeze it for longer storage.
Sumac Attack Tea
Sumac Attack Tea is a loose-leaf herbal tea inspired by our Pink Sumac Syrup. It is a lighter, everyday way to enjoy our signature sumac blend hot or iced. Because it is loose leaf, you will need a tea ball, tea infuser, or fine-mesh strainer.
See all three options together in our Pink Sumac Products collection.
Pink Sumac vs. ElderMac
Pink Sumac puts staghorn sumac front and center. ElderMac Syrup combines staghorn sumac and elderberries with herbs, local honey, and apple cider vinegar. If you want to experience the distinctive tart character of sumac, start with Pink Sumac. If you already enjoy elderberry and want both berries in one blend, ElderMac may be the better fit.
